A practical guide to buying your first aircraft in the UK. Learn how to choose the right aircraft, understand ownership costs, check maintenance records, arrange a pre-purchase inspection, verify ownership and avoid costly mistakes before completing your purchase.
Buying your first aircraft is one of the most exciting steps you can take as a pilot. Having an aircraft available when you want it, knowing exactly how it has been operated and maintained, and being able to plan trips without relying on club availability can completely change the way you fly.
But buying an aircraft is very different from buying a car. The purchase price is only one part of the equation, and two apparently similar aircraft can have very different values once their maintenance history, engine condition, equipment, airworthiness status and future costs are taken into account.
For a first-time buyer, the abbreviations, maintenance records and regulatory requirements can initially feel daunting. You do not need to become an aircraft engineer to make a sensible purchase, but you do need to know which questions to ask, when to bring in professional help and when to walk away.
This guide covers the main things to consider when buying your first light aircraft in the UK, from choosing the right type and setting a realistic budget to checking the records, arranging a pre-purchase inspection, confirming ownership and completing the transfer.
1. Decide What You Actually Need From an Aircraft
Before opening the classifieds, start with the flying you genuinely expect to do. It is easy to buy an aircraft because it looks impressive or because its performance is appealing, only to discover that it is poorly suited to most of your flying.
Think about your typical mission rather than your occasional dream trip. If most flights will involve one or two people travelling around the UK, your requirements may be very different from those of a pilot regularly carrying four adults with baggage or flying long distances across Europe.
Consider realistic passenger load, useful load, baggage space, runway length and surface, cruise speed, range, fuel availability, hangar requirements and whether you intend to fly mainly VFR or develop towards more capable IFR touring.
Your licence, ratings and experience also matter. A faster, retractable or higher-performance aircraft can bring additional training, insurance and operating considerations. In many cases, a relatively simple aircraft that flies regularly is a better first ownership experience than a complex aircraft that spends most of its time in the hangar.
A useful rule is simple: buy for the flying you will do most of the time, not the exceptional trip you might make once a year.
2. Set a Realistic Aircraft Ownership Budget
The asking price is the most visible cost of aircraft ownership, but it is rarely the most important number over the long term. Before deciding what you can afford to buy, work out what you can comfortably afford to operate and maintain.
Typical ownership costs can include insurance, hangarage or parking, annual or scheduled maintenance, airworthiness administration, fuel, oil, landing fees, navigation subscriptions, avionics database updates, consumables and unscheduled repairs. Depending on the aircraft, you may also want to build reserves towards future engine, propeller or other major component work.
Some costs are largely fixed whether you fly 20 hours or 100 hours a year. Others increase with utilisation. This is why an aircraft with a surprisingly low purchase price can still be expensive to own.
Do not use the purchase price as your entire aircraft budget. An unexpected maintenance item shortly after purchase can easily run into thousands of pounds. We’re not trying to put you off here…we’re just giving you complete transparency. Leaving a sensible contingency after completion is one of the best decisions a first-time owner can make.
3. Certified Aircraft and Permit to Fly Aircraft
One of the first distinctions a UK buyer will encounter is between aircraft operating with a Certificate of Airworthiness and aircraft operating on a Permit to Fly.
Many familiar factory-built light aircraft operate under a Certificate of Airworthiness regime. For UK Part 21 aircraft that qualify for a Part 21 Certificate of Airworthiness, the CAA states that the Certificate of Airworthiness itself is non-expiring and is validated annually through a valid Airworthiness Review Certificate, commonly referred to as an ARC.
Permit to Fly aircraft operate under a different airworthiness framework. The CAA explains that a Permit to Fly may be issued to aircraft that do not meet the ICAO certification standards required for a Certificate of Airworthiness, subject to the applicable requirements. National Permit aircraft commonly include categories such as amateur-built aircraft, microlights, gyroplanes, some ex-military aircraft and aircraft without a valid type certificate.
Neither category is automatically better. What matters is understanding the exact airworthiness regime of the aircraft you are considering, the organisations or engineers who can support it, and any operational limitations that apply. If you are unsure, obtain advice from an appropriately experienced maintenance organisation, engineer or relevant recommending organisation before committing.
4. Finding Aircraft for Sale in the UK
Once you know your mission and budget, you can begin looking seriously at aircraft for sale. Listings may come from private owners, aircraft sales businesses, flying clubs, syndicates and specialist marketplaces.
A useful advert should include the exact model and year, registration, airframe hours, engine and propeller times, maintenance status, airworthiness status, avionics, equipment, location and relevant recent work.
Treat the advert as the beginning of your investigation rather than evidence that every claim has been independently verified. Terms such as 'excellent condition', 'low time' or 'recently maintained' need context.
AERLO brings together general aviation aircraft advertised for sale in the UK and Europe (and soon the world…), making it easier to discover aircraft from private sellers and aviation businesses in one place. When comparing listings, focus on the underlying aircraft and its records rather than simply choosing the lowest asking price.
5. Understanding Aircraft Hours and Maintenance History
Aircraft adverts contain a lot of numbers. Understanding what those numbers actually mean is essential before comparing two aircraft.
Airframe Hours
Total airframe time, often shown as TTAF or a similar abbreviation, tells you how many hours the airframe has accumulated. A lower-time airframe may be attractive, but total time should never be viewed in isolation. Age, environment, utilisation, storage, previous repairs and maintenance history can be just as important.
Engine Hours
Engine time may be described using terms such as hours since overhaul, TSO or SMOH. These figures are useful, but they do not tell the whole story. A low-hours engine that has spent long periods inactive may not necessarily be preferable to an engine with more hours that has been flown regularly and maintained well.
Ask when the engine was overhauled, who carried out the work, what documentation supports it, how the aircraft has been used since, and whether there are relevant calendar or maintenance considerations for that engine and operation.
Propeller Hours
The propeller also deserves attention. Depending on the propeller and applicable maintenance requirements, both hours and calendar time may be relevant. A freshly overhauled engine does not mean the propeller is equally fresh.
Maintenance and Mandatory Requirements
Review the aircraft's maintenance history carefully. Relevant Airworthiness Directives, mandatory requirements, inspections, modifications, repairs and component limitations should be properly documented and addressed as applicable.
The CAA's current CAP 747 provides information on mandatory requirements for the continuing airworthiness of UK-registered aircraft, but determining exactly what applies to a particular aircraft is a job for appropriately competent maintenance personnel. Headline hours are only part of the story; condition and documented history matter.
6. Never Skip the Aircraft Records
An aircraft's paperwork can tell you as much about it as the aircraft itself. Before purchasing, make sure the records are complete enough for an appropriately qualified person to establish the aircraft's maintenance and airworthiness position.
Depending on the aircraft, records may include airframe, engine and propeller logbooks, maintenance worksheets and releases, Airworthiness Directive and mandatory requirement status, modification and repair records, weight and balance information, equipment records, Certificate of Airworthiness and ARC documentation, or Permit to Fly and Certificate of Validity documentation as applicable.
Look for unexplained gaps, inconsistent hours, missing maintenance entries, undocumented modifications or evidence that important records have been lost. Missing paperwork does not automatically make an aircraft unusable, but resolving incomplete records can be expensive and time-consuming.
If you do not understand the documentation, do not guess. Ask an engineer or maintenance organisation familiar with the aircraft type and regulatory regime to review it.
7. Get an Independent Pre-Purchase Inspection
A proper pre-purchase inspection is one of the most important protections available to an aircraft buyer. The purpose is not simply to confirm that the aircraft can fly today. You want an experienced person to assess its condition, review the records and identify issues that may affect safety, value or future maintenance costs.
Where practical, use an engineer or maintenance organisation familiar with the aircraft type who can give you an independent view. Agree the scope before the inspection begins, because a quick visual look around an aircraft is very different from a detailed pre-purchase examination and records review.
Areas of interest will depend on the aircraft, but may include corrosion, structural condition, evidence of previous damage or repairs, engine condition and leaks, hoses and mounts, landing gear, brakes and tyres, control systems, avionics installations, electrical systems, propeller condition and the quality and completeness of the records.
The inspection may reveal defects that are not immediately airworthiness-critical but could become your financial responsibility shortly after purchase. That information can help you renegotiate the price, require work to be completed before sale or decide that the aircraft is not right for you.
Spending money investigating an aircraft you ultimately decide not to buy can feel frustrating. It can also be far cheaper than buying the wrong aircraft.
8. Inspecting and Flying the Aircraft
You should still inspect the aircraft yourself even when an engineer is carrying out the technical assessment. This is your opportunity to decide whether it suits you as an owner and pilot.
Look at the general condition of the exterior and interior. Sit in every seat you expect to use. Check baggage access, visibility, cockpit ergonomics and whether you can comfortably operate the controls. Consider how the aircraft will work for the passengers and trips you actually intend to make.
Where appropriate and legally possible, a demonstration or test flight can help you understand how the aircraft performs and whether systems operate as expected. If you are unfamiliar with the type, involve an instructor or pilot with relevant experience rather than trying to evaluate everything yourself.
A flight should complement, not replace, a proper technical inspection. A pleasant 30-minute flight cannot reveal everything hidden in years of maintenance history.
9. Check Who Owns the Aircraft and Whether Finance Is Registered Against It
Do not assume that the name shown on the UK aircraft register proves legal ownership.
The CAA explicitly states that the UK Register of Civil Aircraft is not a register of legal ownership and that registration does not confirm legal title. G-INFO is still an important starting point because it allows you to check the aircraft's current registered details and registration history.
If the person selling the aircraft is not the registered owner, the CAA advises buyers to ensure that a full chain of ownership can be identified from the last registered owner to the person purporting to own the aircraft.
The CAA also advises anyone intending to take ownership of a UK-registered aircraft to check the registered ownership and conduct a search of the UK Register of Aircraft Mortgages before completing the transaction. A mortgage search can reveal registered mortgages against the aircraft, although the CAA notes that the register does not show liens or other outstanding debts such as unpaid landing fees.
For a high-value purchase, or where ownership history is complicated, taking appropriate legal advice can be sensible. The objective is simple: establish that the seller has the right to sell the aircraft and understand whether any registered financial interest needs to be dealt with before completion.
10. Obtain an Insurance Quote Before You Buy
Do not wait until you have bought the aircraft to discover whether you can insure it on acceptable terms.
Insurance premiums and pilot requirements can vary significantly according to aircraft type, value, pilot experience, total time, time on type, ratings, intended use and the insurer's own underwriting criteria. An insurer may require differences training, an instructor checkout, supervised hours or other conditions before permitting you to operate as pilot in command.
The CAA states that an aircraft must have the required insurance before it can fly. Minimum levels of cover depend on factors including maximum take-off mass and the number of passengers carried, with requirements covering areas such as passengers, baggage, third-party liability and, where applicable, war and terrorism risks.
Speak to an aviation insurance broker while you are still considering the aircraft. Give them accurate information about your experience and intended operation, and obtain an indication of both premium and any pilot conditions.
An aircraft that appears affordable can become a poor choice if insurance is prohibitively expensive or imposes conditions that do not work for you.
11. Making an Offer and Completing the Purchase
Once you have found the right aircraft, reviewed its history, arranged the appropriate inspection and checked insurance, you may be ready to make an offer.
Do not allow excitement to rush the process.
Any offer should clearly establish what is included in the sale and whether it is subject to conditions such as a satisfactory pre-purchase inspection, satisfactory records review or resolution of agreed defects. If a deposit is required, make sure the circumstances in which it is refundable or non-refundable are clearly understood in writing.
The sale documentation should accurately identify the aircraft and the parties to the transaction. For a significant purchase, particularly where the transaction is unusual, cross-border or involves complex ownership, professional legal advice may be appropriate.
Before transferring the balance, make sure the agreed conditions have been satisfied, the seller has authority to sell, any issues revealed by the inspection have been dealt with as agreed, and you understand exactly when ownership and risk pass to you.
Keep copies of the sale agreement, bill of sale or equivalent evidence of transfer, payment records and all documentation supplied with the aircraft.
12. What Happens After You Buy the Aircraft?
Completing the purchase does not end the process. The aircraft must be correctly registered, insured, maintained and operated before you simply take the keys and fly away.
For a change of ownership of a UK-registered aircraft, the CAA states that it is the new owner's responsibility to re-register the aircraft in their own name within 28 days. The current CAA process uses the CA1 application and requires evidence of insurance, or the applicable declaration if the aircraft will not fly until insurance evidence has been supplied.
The seller also has responsibilities in notifying the CAA of the transfer. The CAA's registration guidance explains the relevant process for returning or replacing the Certificate of Registration information.
Registration and airworthiness are separate matters. The CAA reminds new owners that they are responsible for ensuring the aircraft is maintained and operated in accordance with the requirements of its Certificate of Airworthiness or Permit to Fly and that the appropriate airworthiness documentation is in place before flight.
Arrange your maintenance support, insurance, hangarage or parking and any required pilot training before the first flight as owner. Even if no formal training is mandated for your particular circumstances, familiarisation with an unfamiliar type is sensible and may also be required by your insurer.
Common First-Time Aircraft Buying Mistakes
Many expensive aircraft-buying mistakes are avoidable. The most common problems usually come from rushing, focusing on the wrong numbers or failing to obtain independent advice.
Buying on appearance rather than condition. A beautiful paint scheme and new interior do not compensate for poor maintenance history or expensive underlying defects.
Spending the entire budget on the purchase price. Keep funds available for insurance, maintenance, upgrades and unexpected repairs.
Skipping an independent pre-purchase inspection. An annual inspection or a seller's assurance is not a substitute for your own due diligence.
Assuming low hours always means better. Utilisation, age, storage and maintenance history all matter.
Ignoring calendar time. Engines, propellers and other components may have considerations that cannot be understood from flying hours alone.
Failing to check insurance before purchase. Know whether you can obtain suitable cover and what pilot conditions may apply.
Buying too much aircraft. Extra speed, complexity and equipment can bring extra cost. Make sure you genuinely need it.
Failing to review the records. Missing or inconsistent paperwork can create serious problems later.
Assuming the registered owner proves legal title. The CAA specifically warns that the UK Register is not a register of legal ownership.
Forgetting the ongoing costs. The cheapest aircraft to buy is not necessarily the cheapest aircraft to own.
Questions to Ask Before Buying a Used Aircraft
Before committing to a purchase, build a list of questions and make sure you are satisfied with the answers. Useful questions include:
Why is the aircraft being sold?
How regularly has it flown during the last few years?
Where has it been based and stored?
Who currently maintains it?
When were the engine and propeller last overhauled, and by whom?
Are the complete airframe, engine and propeller records available?
Has the aircraft suffered any known accident, incident or significant damage history?
Have any major structural repairs or modifications been carried out?
What significant maintenance is likely to fall due in the near future?
Are there recurring defects or known faults?
What equipment is included in the sale?
Is any equipment currently unserviceable?
Is the aircraft subject to any registered mortgage?
Will the seller agree to an independent pre-purchase inspection?
A seller being unable to answer one question is not automatically a reason to walk away. A pattern of vague answers, missing documentation or reluctance to allow independent inspection deserves much closer attention.
Frequently Asked Questions About Buying an Aircraft in the UK
How much does a small aircraft cost in the UK?
There is no single figure. Prices vary enormously according to aircraft type, age, condition, engine and propeller status, avionics, maintenance history and market demand. The more useful question is what the aircraft will cost you to own over several years, not simply what it costs to buy today.
Can a PPL holder own an aircraft?
Yes. Aircraft ownership and pilot licensing are separate matters. Owning an aircraft does not itself give you the privilege to fly it; you must still hold the appropriate licence, ratings, medical or medical declaration where applicable, recency and any other privileges required for the flight.
Do I need to register an aircraft with the CAA after buying it?
For a UK-registered aircraft changing ownership, the CAA states that the new owner is responsible for re-registering it in their own name within 28 days. The registration process is separate from the aircraft's airworthiness requirements.
What is an ARC?
An Airworthiness Review Certificate is used to validate the airworthiness status of relevant aircraft. The CAA states that UK Part 21 aircraft types qualifying for a Part 21 Certificate of Airworthiness have a non-expiring Certificate of Airworthiness that is validated annually by the issue or extension of an ARC.
What is a Permit to Fly?
A Permit to Fly is an airworthiness document used for aircraft that fall within the relevant permit regime rather than operating on a conventional Certificate of Airworthiness. The exact requirements and operating limitations depend on the aircraft and the type of permit.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection?
For a used aircraft, it is one of the strongest pieces of due diligence you can carry out. The scope should be appropriate to the aircraft and agreed with a competent engineer or maintenance organisation. The cost of a good inspection can be small compared with the cost of discovering a major problem after completion.
Is an aircraft share worth considering instead?
Absolutely. If you want regular access to an aircraft without carrying the full fixed cost and responsibility of sole ownership, an aircraft syndicate can be a very effective alternative. The right choice depends on how often you fly, how much availability you need and how much responsibility you want to take on.
Should You Buy Your First Aircraft?
Aircraft ownership can be hugely rewarding. It gives you greater freedom, familiarity and control over when and where you fly. It can also encourage you to fly more regularly and develop a much deeper understanding of the aircraft you operate.
The best first aircraft is not necessarily the newest, fastest or cheapest one you can find. It is the aircraft that fits your mission, has a sound and understandable history, can be supported by the right maintenance expertise and remains comfortably within your ongoing budget.
Take your time. Compare several aircraft. Ask questions. Read the records. Speak to engineers, insurers and experienced owners. Most importantly, be prepared to walk away if something does not feel right or cannot be properly verified.
