1. The Aircraft Purchase Price

For the worked example, we use £10,000 per year as an overall maintenance and airworthiness allowance. A typical annual maintenance event can readily fall around £6,000-£12,000 once inspection and associated work are included, but a difficult year can cost considerably more. Defects, corrosion, brakes, tyres, instruments, exhausts and avionics can all add to the bill. £10,000 is a planning allowance, not a cap.
6. Certificate of Airworthiness, ARC and Permit Aircraft
The applicable airworthiness framework affects maintenance and administration. UK Part 21 aircraft and Permit to Fly aircraft operate under different regimes. Do not assume either has one universal annual cost; assess the actual aircraft, records and upcoming work.
7. Fuel: Your Most Visible Flying Cost
At £2.40 plus VAT per litre, fuel is £2.88 per litre including 20% VAT. At an illustrative 32 litres per hour, fuel costs £92.16 per flying hour. That is £4,608 at 50 hours, £6,912 at 75 hours and £9,216 at 100 hours. Use the actual aircraft fuel burn and current local fuel price for your own budget.
8. Oil and Other Consumables
Our worked example allows £3 per flying hour for oil and minor consumables. Real costs vary by engine and operation.
9. Landing, Parking and Handling Fees
For smaller GA airfields, use around £30-£60 per trip as a planning range. Larger airports, handling and overnight parking can cost much more. These are per-trip costs, not hourly costs. Our example uses £45 per trip and assumes roughly one destination trip per two flying hours.
10. Navigation, Charts and Avionics Subscriptions
Modern ownership can include flight-planning, charts and certified avionics databases. We retain £600 per year for subscriptions and miscellaneous fixed costs in the example.
11. Engine Reserves: What Are You Really Paying Per Hour?
Using a minimum future engine cost of £45,000 spread over 1,500 hours gives an engine reserve of £30 per flying hour. That is £1,500 at 50 hours, £2,250 at 75 hours and £3,000 at 100 hours. This is a budgeting tool, not a prediction of exact overhaul timing or cost.
12. Propeller Reserves
The £30-per-hour figure above is specifically an engine reserve. It does not fund every future propeller or major component expense. Add a separate propeller/component reserve where appropriate.
13. Unexpected Maintenance: The Ownership Wildcard
The £10,000 maintenance allowance does not protect against every possible defect. Keep additional cash contingency available. If an unexpected four-figure bill would make the aircraft unaffordable to keep airworthy, the budget is probably too tight.

That fixed base alone equals £346/hour at 50 hours, £230.67/hour at 75 hours and £173/hour at 100 hours. Variable costs then sit on top.

What These Numbers Do - and Do Not - Tell You
The calculations correctly treat landing/parking as a per-trip cost, convert £2.40 + VAT to £2.88/litre, and use a £45,000 engine reserve basis. They exclude purchase capital, finance, depreciation/appreciation, tax, separate propeller reserves, upgrades and exceptional maintenance beyond the allowance.
The Cost of Not Flying Enough
Low utilisation spreads fixed costs across fewer hours. If you fly relatively little, renting or a syndicate may make more financial sense.
