With origins dating back to 1936, The Army Flying Association (AFA) operates as a UK CAA-approved Declared Training Organisation (DTO) from Middle Wallop, the home of the Army Air Corps. The association provides Private Pilot Licence (PPL(A)) and Instrument Rating (Restricted) training primarily for serving and retired members of the UK Armed Forces, offering a structured pathway from introductory flying through to recognised civilian pilot qualifications. Eligible members can also use Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) towards the cost of training, making the AFA a valuable route for military personnel transitioning into civilian aviation.
Operating seven days a week, the AFA combines professional flight instruction with a strong military aviation heritage and a supportive club environment. In addition to ab initio training, it provides licence progression opportunities for graduates of military Elementary Flying Training and emphasises high-quality instruction delivered from one of the UK's most historic military airfields. Membership is limited to serving regular and reserve personnel, as well as retired members of the Armed Forces, ensuring the association maintains a close-knit community centred on military and general aviation.
